During the height of the global COVID-19 pandemic, the Aung Myint Mo COVID Center (the Center) in Yangon played a crucial role in Myanmar’s battle against the virus. Established in September 2020 as a quarantine and treatment center, the Center quickly played a vital role in providing care and support for many Myanmar citizens during the pandemic.
The buildings, initially public housing owned by Myanmar’s Department of Urban and Housing Development, were temporarily transferred to the Oxygen Donors and Volunteers Team. This initiative was led by Shwe Than Lwin Group (the Group), which managed the center and provided essential resources for the fight against the pandemic.
The Center’s Origins and Role
The Center initially served as a quarantine facility in Dagon Myothit (South) Township for those affected by the virus. However, during Myanmar’s third wave of COVID-19 in July 2021, the center transitioned into a treatment facility. During this time, it accommodated around 35,000 individuals, providing them with not only health care but also food support.
Shwe Than Lwin Group, a leading member of the Oxygen Donors and Volunteers Team, played a key role in the Center’s operations. The Group not only encouraged its employees to volunteer but also coordinated with various business organisations and voluntary associations to ensure the Center’s smooth functioning. Between September 2020 and November 2023, the company donated MMK 1,300 million to the Center, further contributing MMK 110 million toward COVID-19 treatment operations.
Shwe Than Lwin Group’s mission with the Center was clear: to help Myanmar overcome the devastating impact of the pandemic. Through its contributions of manpower, resources, and financial aid, the Group sought to protect Myanmar’s communities, regardless of nationality, race, or social class.
Working at the COVID center made me proud. I could help those in critical need of healthcare and counseling, especially those fearful of being alone or of oxygen shortages
